Alta Via 1
The Alta Via 1 (High Road 1) is a famous trekking route through the Italian Alps, the Dolomites. The AV1 was created by the Italian military during World War 1 to traverse the technical mountain terrain.
The trail for the Alta Via 1 is about 75 miles long and runs from Lago di Braies to Belluno and goes through some of the most famous parts of the Dolomites. The historic trail incorporates via ferrata portions to climb up and down the steepest parts of the trail. These sections require a harness and technical equipment to pass safely, so we will bypass them using the more common variations to the AV1.
Along the trail there are many rifugios, or mountain huts, to spend the night. This means that after a long day in the mountains, you will have a warm bed and hot meal to recover for the next day.
The AV1 is normally completed in 10-14 days, however we will only take 5. While we will not be running the entire day, we will be moving faster than a leisurely pace. In general, we hike the uphills, run the downhills, and take the flat sections as they come.
